Medigap Plan G
- Higher monthly premium
- Unpredictable annual rate increases
- Broad provider access with Original Medicare
Florida Medigap Comparison
Plan G offers more predictable coverage, while Plan N may provide a lower monthly premium in exchange for limited copays and possible excess charges.
This page compares the benefits, tradeoffs and projected long-term costs of Plan G and Plan N. You can also use our calculator below to compare Plan G, Plan N and a Medicare Advantage PPO over a period of up to 20 years.
Plan G and Plan N are two of the most popular Medigap options in Florida. Both help cover many of the out-of-pocket costs left behind by Original Medicare, including major hospital expenses and Part B coinsurance.
The biggest differences usually appear at the doctor’s office. Plan G offers broader and more predictable coverage after the annual Part B deductible. Plan N generally has a lower monthly premium, but may include limited office visit and emergency room copays and does not cover Part B excess charges.
Neither plan is automatically better. Plan G emphasizes predictability. Plan N may reduce the monthly premium in exchange for limited cost-sharing. The right fit depends on how you use healthcare, your budget and how long you expect to keep the plan.
| Benefit | Plan G | Plan N |
|---|---|---|

Benefits shown reflect standardized federal Medigap plan designs. Actual premiums vary by insurance company, age, rating method and location.
A lower starting premium can look like the obvious choice, especially when you are healthy and do not expect to use much care. But the decision is not only about what you save today. It is also about how premiums, copays and healthcare use may change over time.
Plan N can be a strong fit for someone who is comfortable with limited cost-sharing in exchange for a lower monthly premium. Plan G may be a better fit for someone who values predictable coverage and wants fewer variables when using healthcare.
Another important consideration is the ability to change Medigap coverage later. After your Medigap open enrollment period and any applicable guaranteed issue rights have passed, moving to a different Medigap plan may require medical underwriting. A future change in health can affect whether an application is approved and what coverage may cost.
That does not mean the lower-premium option is wrong. It means the decision should not be based on premium alone. The better question is whether the plan fits how you are likely to use healthcare for years to come and whether you are comfortable with the tradeoffs if your needs change.

These figures are not tied to one insurance company or plan. They are general assumptions used only to illustrate how PPO cost-sharing can affect the projection.

Another Coverage Approach
Competitive Medicare Advantage PPO plans in Florida often have a $0 monthly plan premium, but members pay copays when they receive care. For some clients, adding a hospital indemnity plan can provide fixed cash benefits for covered hospital stays and other eligible services, helping offset part of that financial exposure.
This approach is not the same as owning Plan G, and it will not eliminate every Medicare Advantage cost. But for someone who cannot justify or comfortably afford a rising Medigap premium and still wants flexibility in how they receive care, a PPO paired with hospital indemnity coverage may create a more manageable balance between monthly cost and protection from larger copays.
Some hospital indemnity plans may offer guaranteed-issue enrollment within specified age ranges. Availability, issue ages, renewal provisions, benefits and premiums vary by insurance company, product and state. Hospital indemnity coverage is supplemental insurance and does not replace Medicare Advantage, Original Medicare or Medigap coverage.
